This book is designed to deepen educators' understanding of teaching mathematics to children ages 3 to 6 (preschool and kindergarten) in ways that are playful yet intentional and that allow children and their ideas to drive the learning. Readers are invited to observe and analyze vignettes that illustrate authentic interactions between children and teachers throughout the day--both during planned/structured learning experiences and in informal spaces (e.g., meal times, transitions, choice time) where math learning opportunities naturally occur--and highlight how teachers can support mathematical learning that is child-led. These classroom vignettes are bolstered by discussions of the details of children's mathematical thinking as well as examples of varied informal, in-the-moment assessment approaches. With the addition of (1) a research overview of what children know and need learn in
