The Dogue de Bordeaux is a breed of dog that is a part of the Mastiff breed one of the most ancient breeds of dog that originates from France. The French placed an emphasis on keeping their ancient breeds 'pure' and a Dogue de Bordeaux with a 'black mask' on its muzzle is considered to have been bred with the English Mastiff. The Dogue de Bordeaux is commonly also known as the 'Bordeaux Mastiff' and the 'French Mastiff.' The breed was originally bred and developed in the south of France around the city of Bordeaux and the city lent its name to the breed.
The Dogue de Bordeaux was originally split into two separate typings: the Douge and the Dougin. A 'pure' Dogue de Bordeaux will have a light pink nose, light colored eyes and a red mask. The Douge was the larger of the two typings and is what the modern Dogue de Bordeaux is based upon.
