Sussex is famous for its superb coastline--from Hastings to Bognor Regis--and its rural locations including the South Downs National Park, the South Downs Way and the Sussex Weald. During the late-18th century, the county became famous for seaside resorts such as Brighton and Worthing and today tourism is still a major industry. Further back in the county's history it was the setting for William the Conqueror's victory over King Harold in 1066. Later, in World War II, Sussex was at the forefront of Britain's defense, with its many airfields and the preparations for the D-Day landings taking place there.
