In November 2015, having finished edits on his latest book, Steven Heighton was seized by a new vision: instead of writing another protest poem, he could travel to the frontlines of the Syrian refugee crisis and do whatever he could to help. In Mithymna, on the island of Lesvos, he found an international crew of volunteers from all walks of life staffing OXY, a transit camp providing simple meals, dry clothes, and a brief rest to refugees crossing the straits from Turkey. A few days later, he arrived in Greece, the country where his mother was born, with a shaky grasp of the language and little idea what to expect.
