It is used to study unstained transparent samples with low light absorption that cannot be seen while using the brightfield techniques. It only works with dry (non-immersion) objectives with an aperture of up to 0.9, providing magnification in the range of 4x to 60x. The MAGUS DF1 A 0.9 darkfield condenser is mounted on the microscope instead of the Abbe condenser for the brightfield microscopy. The optimal contrast of the image is achieved by using a cover glass of 0.17mm thickness and a glass slide of 1–1.2mm thickness.
