Evesham grew up on a bend on the River Avon around its famous abbey, one of the largest in the country, and although the abbey was destroyed in the 16th century, the town remained one of the most important settlements in Worcestershire. Today it is renowned as a centre for market gardening. It was also the site of the battle in 1265 which the rebel Simon de Montfort was killed by the royal army.
